Muscle Spindles
Scatteredthroughoutvirtuallyeverystriatedmuscleinthe
body are long, thin, stretch receptors called muscle spin-
dles.Theyarequitesimpleinprinciple,consistingofafew
smallmusclefiberswithacapsulesurroundingthemiddle
third of the fibers. These fibers are called intrafusal fibers,
incontrasttotheordinaryextrafusalfibers.Theendsofthe
intrafusalfibersareattachedtoextrafusalfibers,sowhen-
ever the muscle is stretched, the intrafusal fibers are also
